English Translation: hang, hang up, be hanging, be suspended.
The word colgar has three meanings in the Spanish language. It can be an intransitive verb, meaning to hang something on a hook, as in “colgó el abrigo”. It can also be used as a pronominal verb, meaning to hang oneself from the ceiling or other high place, as in “se colgó de la viga”. Finally, it can also be used as a transitive verb, meaning to hang something from something else such as a hook or ceiling beam, for example “colgó la cortina”, or in a figurative form, for example colgarse (figurative): reflexive verb; to delay oneself doing something, i.e., Pablo es un colgado. (Pablo always procrastinates things.)
Examples:
- Apenas termine el lavarropas, colgá (vos) la ropa para que no se te arrugue. (As soon as the washing machine stops, hang the clothes.)
- ¡No te cuelgues con Facebook, que tenés que estudiar! (Do not waste too much time on FB. You have to study!)
- El día que sienta que ya mi cuerpo no pueda dar más por el deporte, colgaré las zapatillas. (The day I feel my body is no longer fit for sport, I’ll hang my sneakers = quit.)
Using the Spanish Verb Colgar
Colgar is often used in phrases like:
- Nos gustaría elegir un marco dorado y colgar su obra en la galería. (We would like to get a gold frame and hang his/her artwork in the gallery.)
- Bien, oye, Lucía, tengo qué colgar ahora. (Hey, Lucia, sorry, I have to hang up now.)
- Maru Botana se colgó de la luz. (Here it means to steal energy, not to pay for the service.)
- Ganó el 1° premio de la competencia y colgó la toalla. (He won the 1st place and quit training.)

- Pronominal. Colloquial. To talk excessively on the phone – Desde que sale con Juan, Lara se la pasa colgada del teléfono.
- Pronominal. Informal. When a pc or any other electronic device gets blocked or tilted. Estaba trabajando en mi tesina y se me colgó la compu, por suerte había guardado todo.
- To hang something from a hook, nail or similar – Liz colgó su saco en el perchero.
- To delay [a person] in doing an activity or job due to either difficulty or negligence – No hemos podido avanzar, estamos colgados con loas tareas que él nos asignó.
- To hold from somebody or something, letting the rest of the body fall down – A la vuelta del bar Tomás se colgó de Fede de lo borracho que estaba, ¡ja ja!
Composition and Syllables
Colgar has 6 letters: 2 vowels, and 4 consonants. It has 2 syllables [col – gar] with a stress on “-gar”, and it is “palabra Aguda”. “Palabras Agudas” are the ones accented on the last syllable, and the word stress is written only when they end in s, n or vowel, though some words do not stick to this rule due to a diphthong.
