Translation: to be (temporary), to stand, to be present

Let’s review a few examples!

  • Estamos cansados por el viaje: We are tired from the trip.
  • ¿Estás en casa?: Are you at home?
  • Laura está mirando TV: Laura is watching TV.
  • Estamos a 10 de octubre: It is the 10th of October.

From a translation point of view, the verb “to be” is divided into “ser” y “estar”, and these are some of the most commonly used verbs in Spanish.

Since it is one of the most frequently used verbs, estar can be confusing for many Spanish students because it is usually translated as “to be,” just like the verb ser. Although they can often be translated the same way, ser and estar are distinct verbs with distinct meanings and are seldom synonymous.

It is probably more helpful to learn the two verbs separately, seeing how they function. After you’ve read this lesson, make sure you read the lesson on ser to see how it is used.

Estar is irregular, meaning it does not follow a common conjugation pattern; and it’s also pronominal, that is it can be conjugated in a reflexive way such as: estarme, estarte, estarse, estarnos, estaros and estarse.

  • Estar de acuerdo: to agree
  • Estar de más: to be unnecessary
  • Estar de pie: to be standing
  • Estar de vuelta: to be back. Also, to be well-experienced (may be accompanied by an arrogant attitude, for example: Estoy de vuelta (I know much better than you)

Forms of Verb Estar

  • Infinitive: estar
  • Gerund: estando
  • Participle: estado

Using the Verb Estar

Estar is often used to talk about a temporary state or condition, often one resulting from a change, for example: Ella está alegre de verte (She is glad to see you). It is also used to mention the location of a person or thing, for example: El maestro no está en el aula porque hoy no hay clases (The teacher is not in the classroom because today is a holiday). Another use of the verb estar is as an auxiliary verb followed by the gerund in the present progressive construction, for example: María está estudiando porque tiene examen (María is studying because she has an exam).

Long story short, its most frequent uses are:

  • Location: El libro está sobre la mesa – The book is on the table. / Yo estoy en Buenos Aires – I am in Buenos Aires.
  • Physical or mood states (people or things) and transitory qualities, characteristics which have changed or may change: Trabajé todo el día, por eso ahora estoy agotado – I worked all day, so now I’m exhausted. / ¡Ella era tan delgada y ahora está muy gorda! – She was so thin and now she’s so fat!
  • Professions or transitory activity (estar de): Emilio es estudiante, pero por las noches está de camarero en un bar – Emilio is a student, but at night he works as a waiter in a bar.

Non-personal Forms

  • Infinitivo simple: estar
  • Gerundio simple: estando
  • Participio: estado
  • Infinitivo compuesto: haber estado
  • Gerundio compuesto: habiendo estado

Now let’s learn together how to conjugate it in the indicative mood: These charts also include the Spanish variety from Argentina, called “Rioplatense”, which conjugates differently for both singular and plural 2nd persons (vos/tú and ustedes/vosotros).
