Translation: to find, meet, encounter, detect somebody/something, strike somebody/something, see somebody/something, identify somebody/something.
Encontrar is an irregular Spanish AR verb, this is it changes the stem in the Present, Present Subjunctive and Imperative tenses. Following the pattern of sonar, when the stem of the verb is stressed, the “o” changes to “ue”.
Though encontrar has the same basic meaning as to find, it is more frequent than its English equivalent and occurs in a wider range of situations.
The noun form encuentro refers to various kinds of encounters.
Using Encontrar when it means ‘To Find’
Most times, encontrar can be translated as “to find”:
- Quiero encontrar al hombre de mi vida. (I want to find the love/man of my life.)
- Aquí vas a encontrar la mejor comida del mundo. (Here you will find the best food in the world.)
- No encuentro la opción de exportar la foto. (I cannot find the option to export the photo).
- ¿Encontraste las llaves de tu coche? (Did you find your car keys?)
- No pude encontrar lo que estaba buscando. (I could not find what I was looking for.)
- Encontré que las puertas de las oportunidades se abrieron. (I found the doors of opportunity have opened.)
- Los médicos le encontraron el cáncer justo a tiempo. (The doctors found the cancer just in time).
You may of course find better translations/options for the sentences above. When translating, we often have to find the best equivalent, always considering the context.
Using Encontrarse
The reflexive form encontrarse sometimes suggests that something has been discovered accidentally or unexpectedly:
- Se encontró el dinero en la calle. (He (unexpectedly) found money in the street).
- Yo me encuentro con el mismo problema. (I come across the same problem).
The reflexive form can also mean “to meet” someone or some things that have something in common (could be metaphorically).
- Luis y Valeria se encontraron en secreto. (Luis and Valeria met secretly).
- La medicina y la fe se encuentran en Lourdes. (Medicine and faith meet in Lourdes.)
The reflexive form can also be used in the structure we call pasiva con “se” :
- Se encontraron las llaves de la casa, pero ningún efecto personal. (The keys were found, but no other personal object).
- No se encontró nada. Era una alerta falsa. (Nothing was found. It was a false alarm).
Mastering the Spanish Verb Conjugation
Verb conjugation is the process of modifying a verb to indicate who is doing what and when. And it is vital for speaking and understanding Spanish. But it doesn’t have to be difficult. Or boring.
Unlike English, which has so few distinct conjugations for example I / You / He/ She / We / They read; Spanish verbs change for almost every person and tense; so the conjugation of a verb tells you an incredible amount of information in a single word. So much of what you want to communicate in Spanish has an entirely different meaning depending on the verb conjugation:
- the person
- the time frame
To gradually increase confidence in your practice, just start with any of the most common verbs from the Spanish Verbs List.

Most Frequent Definitions of Encontrar
- To find someone or something you are looking for.
- To come across someone or something.
- Two or more persons that gather and go somewhere.
- To be or feel in a certain state, for example: Encontrarse enfermo (Feeling sick)
- To disagree with someone.
- Identify, detect.
- To find sth unexpectedly, for example: Se encontró con aquella catástrofe (He encountered that catastrophe.)
