What is it like to have a lesson with me?
What Are My Lessons Like?
What curriculum do you follow?
The teaching methodology will start from the final objective (s) of the student, their needs, as well as the previous level they have in the language and, not least, the type of student. To do this, we will have an initial interview where we will answer questions such as: why do you want to learn Spanish? In general, what has it been like to learn something new? Do you like more to read a book or wait for the movie? From these points, we will determine not only the content to be learned but also how and when to teach and evaluate. Although the curriculum will vary according to these factors, it will primarily be guided by an active learning approach that seeks to promote student participation through problem-based, thought-based, or project-based learning.
How do you plan lessons?
Planning for each lesson will begin with setting the student’s macro goal and micro goals. That is if your ultimate goal is to get good grades in your Spanish class in high school, our specific objectives will be to attack each topic developed in the classroom, week by week, as well as the doubts and inconveniences you encountered while studying. However, this planning is not rigid, since it can be modified along the way to adapt again to the demands that the student may have, such as that surprise exam that was announced a day in advance, or that business meeting that you can’t postpone.
How do you measure progress?
Although the word progress is somewhat subjective, let’s face it, who doesn’t like to feel like they’re moving on the road to achieving a goal? For this reason, of the micros objectives that we establish, we will check progress week by week. Depending on the student, their progress will be evaluated either quantitatively, through exams and theoretical activities; or qualitatively, through more practical activities such as conversations and analysis of movies, series, songs, etc.
What materials/tools do you use?
Thanks to this initial interview with you as a student, we will be able to know if your type of teaching leans towards the visual, the oral, or the auditory; your current level of the language, and your ultimate goal. This will not only serve to establish the way to follow but also what we will need in the process, from movies to books and recordings of real conversations. However, you will always have a base guide to turn to when and where you need it.
How can you help students with their long-term goals?
As a teacher, my goal is to help meet a student’s goal. For that reason, I like to think that the best way to ensure that you will achieve your goal is to make it mine as well. Just as in a video game you have a guide that gives you clues and tells you what to do (and what not), I will be by your side step by step on this path. A fundamental part of reaching a goal is to stay motivated, therefore, just as before facing the final boss, small tasks must be completed, I will propose various challenges with constant checks that will encourage you in the process of mastering that written or conversational Spanish that you need for a hobby, tourism, business or any purpose you want to achieve.
