What Are My Lessons Like?

What curriculum do you follow?

The curriculum that I use depends very much on the student that I am teaching. The techniques I use to educate a child are much different than those I use while teaching an adult. This is because children and adults process language differently and also have different attention spans. In spite of this, I believe in assessing my student’s current level and then using all types of media (audio, visual, books, etc.) in order to completely immerse my student in the language. This includes incorporating material that is close to their culture and passions to keep engagement as high as possible. I also have worked with people of many different nationalities and am aware of the most common errors that people with different first languages make and make sure to constantly address those issues so my students can learn Spanish in a manner that makes them sound more professional and feel more confident.

How do you plan lessons?

My lesson plan first begins with my student, what their needs are, what their goals, and what their expectations are. From there I compile different material that I have accumulated and created over the years to create a lesson to address whichever subject we are currently learning and adding elements that personally interest my student to keep them engaged. I am a huge believer in learning, drilling, and practicing, this is a tried and true method that I have had huge success with in the past. I personally like to use my melange of material, however, if a student has a specific course or exam that requires use of a specific textbook I am proficient at adapting outside material as well.

How do you measure progress?

Progress is dependent on what the student wants. However, I do not believe in exams, I believe that students must be able to present and speak about a wide variety of subjects with confidence in order to be truly progressing. My courses include consistent presentations, discussions of current events, and homework from lesson to lesson. The intensity of the courses varies based on the student’s desires and needs. I also believe in a strong focus on correct pronunciation and the mitigation of your foreign accent, I work very hard with my students on this because I learned English as a second language and I know the difficulties that come with an accent and through these hardships I learned the best ways to overcome your accent.

What materials/tools do you use?

Over the years, I have collected and created various textbooks, short stories from Spanish writers, songs, podcasts, and T.V. series. After meeting a student I curate this material into a cohesive course designed specifically for their needs and interests. This material is all shared privately and digitally with my clients.

How do you help students achieve their long-term goals?

I help my students achieve their long-term goals by first assessing their level and what their desires are. I make sure to set up realistic expectations based on their level, commitment, and timeline. Once this groundwork has been laid I create smaller modules that I teach the students over the time of the course. By breaking the course into smaller modules this ensures that long-term goals are met.
