What’s it like to have a lesson with me?
What curriculum do you follow?
There is no one-size-fits-all curriculum in my classes, as each student is different and so is their learning style. I can say, however, that as a translator and interpreter I embrace a fully communicative approach in every lesson, and I design each curriculum based on the student’s specific needs and adjust it accordingly. I usually work with adult students who have a clear goal in mind (learning specific terminology related to their job, practicing useful expressions in real-life scenarios, passing an exam or a job interview, among others) and I always encourage them to share their own experiences in each class, which gives them more confidence as they learn the language.
How do you plan lessons?
In the first class, I will have my students answer a few general questions, which will give me a better idea of who they are, the skills they want to improve (whether it is to speak more fluently, improve their listening skills, master grammar, etc.) and the specific goals they want to achieve; each lesson is then created according to their individual needs. I usually begin every lesson with a quick recap of the previous one, then we start working with new grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation through several exercises and online tools; sometimes I will also include one-on-one role play based on real life situations to put their new knowledge into practice.
How do you measure progress?
Student progress is measured in every class. I am not a fan of tests or homework (as they can sometimes discourage the students from learning more), but I always set aside some time at the end of each lesson to give the students feedback and to address any questions or concerns they may have.
What materials/tools do you use?
Google Docs allows me to teach grammar and vocabulary while enabling the students to collaborate in real time. Other online tools I use are glossaries (general and field-specific), well-known dictionaries such as WordReference and Linguee (the second one helps with pronunciation too), Quizlet flashcards, and even songs or movies/series the student may like to make learning Spanish fun.
How do you help students achieve their long-term goals?
Each lesson I teach has a lot of elements that are directly related to what my students experience on a regular basis (the type of job they have, the subjects they take at school or college, their plans for the future, their travel memories, etc.), so they will know their effort is paying off. Additionally, I know constant exposure to the language is key to learning faster, so I always encourage them to practice Spanish or use Spanish media as much as possible outside the class as well.
