What is it like to have a lesson with me?
What Are My Lessons Like?
What curriculum do you follow?
I am familiar with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, having used it to learn English and French and certified both to a B2 level. Therefore, I usually start with basic phrases and constructs for the student to be able to interact in simple ways, then continue building upon that until the student can interact in more challenging situations and gain fluency and confidence producing spoken and written materials.
Another important thing to bear in mind whilst designing the pathway for a student would be to know their motivations and needs beforehand, therefore focusing on things of their interest and using everyday situations as examples for interactions. Consequently, a businessperson would be interested in learning how to reply to an important email or deliver a presentation whilst a traveler would be interested in how to make casual interactions, reading and writing reviews, etc.
How do you plan lessons?
Based on the student level, interests, strengths, and opportunities. Firstly, I introduce a topic, then practice written and oral production on that topic, solve some exercises in order make sure that the theme is well understood, make any clarifications needed, and lastly introduce a final task to integrate what was just learned into the student’s daily life.
E.G. for a family person, I would explain how to use “pretérito” sentences to express situations that took place in the past, practice conjugating the most usual verbs, then making phrases with the verbs that were just studied, based on the phases made by the student revisit any topics needed and answer questions, and lastly make the student write some SMS messages to a family member to let them know how his day went using “pretérito”.
How do you measure progress?
As previously explained, progress will be measured based on the complexity of the situations the student can interact with, fluency and the number of mistakes made by the student and capacity to go back and solve his or her own mistakes.
What materials/tools do you use?
I am familiar with the “Aula Latina” books, as well as, with researching for materials created by other Spanish teachers, use real life news articles, podcasts, video content and music, customize them to one’s purpose, or create some to suit a particular need. I am also open to learn about any other tools that are recommended by your site or other teachers.
How can you help students with their long-term goals?
According to their interests and profile, working on their weaknesses and building upon their strengths. I consider it important to set short term achievable goals, acknowledging when said goals are accomplished and stimulating the student to use what has been learned into everyday life.
